More affected by flu in northwest Ohio than last year

Counties in Northwest Ohio are seeing an increase in flu-related hospitalizations this year and experts are predicting higher rates of the illness, even possibly death.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Counties in Northwest Ohio are seeing an increase in flu-related hospitalizations this year and experts are predicting higher rates of the illness, even possibly death.

"In Wood County, we've had 11 hospitalizations and 75 reported positive cases in comparison to one hospitalization and 17 positive cases last year," said Jennifer Campos, Public Information Officer for Wood County Health District.

Lucas County is also reporting higher numbers than usual, with 102 total flu-related hospitalizations for the season, compared to 2013, when there were six total.

But the recent influx of flu cases is bringing more awareness to the issue.

"As the rates increase, more people tend to get worried about it, and it brings it to their attention. That's when they come in and start saying, 'maybe I should get a flu shot, too,'" said Campos.

Typically, the peak of the season is January or February. If you do get sick, take precaution by covering your coughs and sneezes, washing your hands, disinfecting surfaces, and staying home when you're sick.
