Cavaliers golf ranked 5th in preseason polls

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Darton State golf team is moving down to the NJCAA's Division II this season after finishing fourth in the nation in Division I last season.

Still, the Cavaliers aren't the favorite even after moving down.

The Golf Coaches Association of America released their preseason poll this afternoon. Darton State will start the season ranked fifth.

Mesa Community College out of Arizona and Tennessee's Walters State are tied for first.

Last week, new head coach Gary Hilton told WALB he's not too worried about rankings because he knows where his team stands.

"We finished fourth at nationals last year. We have a lot of high hopes and a lot of talent coming in. On paper, we look really really strong," Hilton says. "First tournament, we'll find out kind of where we sit with everyone else in the nation."

The Cavs will play in that first tournament next week at the Wallace State Invitational in Cullman, AL.
