ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The Atlanta Braves will soon officially kick off a new chapter in their history.

The Major League Baseball team will hold a groundbreaking for its new ballpark in Cobb County on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.

The park is scheduled to open in time for Opening Day in the spring of 2017.

Plans for the new park have not been without controversy - from announcing without warning that they were leaving Turner Field in the fall of 2013, to their choice of location at the intersection of I-75 and I-285 and the concerns about traffic in the area along with what to do with Turner Field once the Braves pack up for good.

The new ballpark be part of a lifestyle destination which will include shops, restaurants and entertainment venues along with the 41,500-seat stadium.

"This new ballpark will be a world-class venue that will give Braves Country the ultimate fan experience, both inside the park and out," said Terry McGuirk, chairman and CEO of the Braves. "We look forward to continuing to build great memories for our fans at this wonderful new location."
