5-0 RiverDogs Shutout Clinches Winning Season

Shutout pitching from Justin Kamplain and Angel Rincon carried the Charleston RiverDogs to a 5-0 win over the Augusta GreenJackets that guaranteed Charleston's third consecutive winning season on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium in South Atlantic League action.

The RiverDogs improved to 38-31 in the second half and 71-68 overall. Charleston also grabbed an insurmountable 3-0 edge in this four-game series at Augusta. The GreenJackets fell to 27-42 in this half and 61-76 for the year.

Charleston tallied an unearned run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Claudio Custodio reached on a throwing error to start the game. A groundout by Tyler Wade and a wild pitch from Joan Gregorio moved Custodio to third base. Miguel Andujar plated Custodio with a two-out single.

Kamplain and Gregorio were almost evenly matched to start Sunday's matinee. Kamplain fired four shutout innings and stranded five baserunners, including four that were in scoring position. Gregorio overcame an unearned run in the opening frame to toss six innings and a quality start. He struck out 10 batters, tying the best total by any RiverDogs opponent this season.

The RiverDogs maintained their 1-0 lead through the seventh inning with scoreless work by both bullpens. Rincon left runners at the corners in the sixth but was otherwise solid. Brandon Farley replaced Gregorio and struck out the side during the seventh.

In the eighth inning, Charleston increased its lead to 4-0. Wade got on base with an error. A single by Michael O'Neill put runners on the corners. O'Neill stole second base, setting up an intentional walk to Andujar. After a force out, Jackson Valera singled to score O'Neill. Following a strikeout, Kale Sumner plated Andujar and Yeicok Calderon with a two-out single.

Another RiverDogs run stretched the advantage to 5-0 during the ninth. Bubba Jones led off with a walk and scored on a one-out single from O'Neill later in the frame.

Rincon pushed his record to 7-3 with five shutout innings to take a victory. Gregorio was charged with the loss, going to 2-7 for the GreenJackets.
