Head coach Bill Clark has been trying to make believers out of the UAB faithful since he accepted the job in January.
He couldn't have gotten off to a better start than he did Saturday as the Blazers soundly defeated rival Troy 48-10.
"It says who we are. One game is one game, but it was a big game and a rivalry game. This is as good of a group I have had to believe and buy into the things we are doing," Clark said in UAB's press release.
"We probably have had three or four of the best practices I have been a part of. I hope that this is a statement to where we are heading and I hope it creates some excitement," Clark said.
The Blazers (1-0) fell behind the Trojans 7-0 before putting up 24-unanswered points before halftime.
The Trojans (0-1) managed a field goal before surrendering 24-unanswered points again in the second half.
Sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 182 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns, including a 55-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Senior running back D.J. Vinson also rushed for a touchdown. He finished with 106 yards on 22 caries.
Junior quarterback Cody Clements completed 12-of-18 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He added a rushing touchdown.
Senior tight end Kennard Backman caught two touchdowns on three receptions for 41 yards.
Senior wide receiver J.J. Nelson led the Blazers in receiving with 65 yards on two receptions.
The Blazers will travel to Starkville, Miss. to take on Mississippi State on Saturday.
