Phoenix College is proud to announce that the PC Volleyball team will break the seal on their 2014 season tomorrow night (Friday), August 29th, at "The Bears' Den"-PC's home gymnasium on the main campus. They'll host Scottsdale Community College Friday that will kick off a three-match homestand to begin both the regular season and the conference schedule. It will be the first time that the Bears will line up at the net for the first time since they made their fourth consecutive appearance in the Region I Finals last November.
For the Bears, the opener is the chance to take the national respect that has already come their way during the preseason and double it. The Bears made the ‘Also Receiving Votes' category of the NJCAA Division II Preseason Volleyball Poll, putting them among the top 25 teams in the nation to begin 2014. That honor served notice to the recruiting class that Bears' Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Liebermann (LEE-buhr-mehn) has brought in, since only two sophomores return from the 2013 squad. Those sophomores-2013 All-Region I Division II & 2nd Team All-ACCAC outside hitter Gianna Kioa (jee-YAH-nuh kee-YOH-uh) and middle blocker/opposite Carissa Allen (kuh-RISS-uh)-have been challenged by a bumper crop of 11 talented freshmen. Liebermann has also recruited some size, since seven of the 13 roster players are between 5'10" and 6' tall.
Tomorrow will be a big test right out of the gates for the young squad, since Scottsdale is the highest-ranked ACCAC team in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll, coming in at #8. There will be added incentive for the Bears to earn their 3rd Region I Division II Championship in the last 4 years, since the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament will be hosted by Phoenix College November 20th through the 22nd, so the Bears would have a huge homecourt advantage in trying to earn their first-ever national volleyball title. After Friday night, the Bears will be right back on the home court just 22 hours later in a non-conference tilt against West Coast Baptist College from California at 5PM Saturday; then will finish up the homestand next Wednesday night, September 3rd, by returning to conference play against Pima Community College at 7PM. All home matches will be played at ‘The Bears Den' on the PC campus (15th Avenue north of Thomas Road in Phoenix). Admission prices for all home volleyball matches are as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for high school students (or PC students who don't show a valid ID); and PC students who show their valid ID as well as kids 12 and under get in FREE.
