Lady Cavs need to light competitive fire

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Darton State Lady Cavaliers are again expected to challenge for a Region XVII title.

Darton is ranked 7th in the preseason polls and already owns a win under it's belt, a 2-0 win over Iowa Central.

Gone is leading scorer Lyana Perez, but head coach Ken Veilands is pleased with the athleticism of his starting 11.

He says building experience on the bench will be key, and adds he's looking to see his team light a competitive fire early on.

"To be competitive and not just be satisfied playing the game," Veilands says on what he wants to see in the Lady Cavs' early games. "To go out on the field with a mindset that we're going to beat the other team and we're going to beat them handily. And not just show up and want to play soccer."

The Lady Cavs play their home opener Wednesday at 5:00 against Georgia Military College.
