Youth being served for Lady Rams

SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) - The Worth County Lady Rams are proving experience may be overrated.

The softball team is off to a 9-1 start this season, a feat made even more impressive by how young they are.

Worth's team features only two upperclassmen, two juniors and a senior. The Lady Rams' starting lineup boasts seven freshmen or sophomores.

"I didn't know what to expect coming in," admits first year head coach Kaleb Hathcock. "I knew we were going to be young, but I knew we had a talented group of freshman coming up. So far the results have been pleasing."

Even the players admit they're a little shocked by their early success. However, they do know how to win together. Many of them have played on the same teams since recreation softball.

They believe that's helping.

"We weren't expecting to be this good, but we knew that we had something special," says sophomore McKenzie Newell. "We always play as one team. We never get down. If we're losing or anything, we just keep our heads up. And we just come together and pull together as a team."

The Lady Rams' only loss of the season came in region play, against Thomas Co. Central. They begin a run of region opponents Tuesday, and hope to keep the winning ways going.

Hathcock believes this team is just hitting their stride.

"It's limitless right now," he says. "I don't think we've reached our peak yet."

Worth County travels to Bainbridge Tuesday.
