CONGRESS TOWNSHIP (WOIO) -

A fatal car crash in Wayne County claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman on Saturday evening.

Troopers from the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating the incident which occurred on August 23, at 6:42 p.m. on Interstate 71 southbound near milepost 196, in Congress Township.

The driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer lost control of the vehicle as it traveled southbound on I-71 at milepost 196.2, causing the vehicle to overturn.

22-year-old Martha Smith and 19-year-old Destiny Curlee, both from Cleveland, were ejected from the car.

Smith was rushed to Lodi Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Curlee was transported to Akron General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

The driver, 27-year-old Stephen Barnett, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in stable condition.    

Town and Country Fire and EMS were on scene as well as ODOT to assist with traffic control.

According to officials, it appears anyone was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
