BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Deonte Shorts has been named Southern's starting quarterback for the 2014 season.
Shorts took the vast majority of first team reps throughout fall camp while in close competition with true freshmen Jarrad Hayes and Austin Howard.
Head coach Dawson Odums says it was Shorts comfort in the offense and experience within the program that made him stand out.
"He's been the leader that we need him to be in order to move this football team forward," the head coach said. "Not a lot of people have seen him play, so it's definitely a good understanding of the offense, and I think he's a special talent. I was happy to see him today and put a smile on his face and let him know that he's going to be our quarterback going forward."
Shorts, a former Southern Lab star, says he always knew he would lead the Jags.
"I want to say it's a shock, but it's not a shock. I've been watching Southern play probably since I was about five years old coming to the games," a happy Shorts said. "Never knew I would be here until around my junior year. And when signing day came, I knew I was coming to Southern man. I knew I would be the hometown hero."
Second on the depth chart is true freshman Austin Howard. Coach Odums says Howard will get reps in the opener against UL-Lafayette so he does gets some needed playing experience.
The Jaguars will travel to Lafayette to play the Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday, Aug. 30.
