Police investigating stolen check ring

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are investigating after they say someone has been going into mailboxes, taking checks, altering them and cashing them.

Police have a photo of a woman they believe may be one of several people involved in the stolen ring.

To protect your money, police recommend never leaving checks in your mailbox.  They also suggest writing on the checks with a gel pen.  Detectives say that makes it tougher for criminals to alter them.

Until the woman and whomever she's working with are caught, people in one local neighborhood say they'll also be watching out for each other.

"If somebody's in your neighbor's mailbox that shouldn't be there, know your neighbors.  Know what they drive," said Toledo resident Kitty Stackpoole.

If you have any information on who's responsible for the stolen checks, call Crimestopper at 419-255-1111.
