Highland Elementary bus delays due to construction project

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One of Sylvania's largest elementary schools is being affected by round-about construction at Mitchaw and Sylvania-Metamora.

In an email to the parents, the principal of Highland Elementary tells parents about a two-week delay due to the construction project. In the email the principal says the project will have an affect on bus transportation for some of the students.

Students living west of the intersection, taking bus routes 24, 73, 105, 109, and 116 should be at their bus stop approximately 10 minutes prior to the assigned bus time and expect a 10 minute delay on the way home.

The intersection should have been opened Wednesday, but was delayed due to weather and an issue with the existing road.

Parent Brian Genide says he is more concerned about the routing of those buses.

"Sterns is a lot more open to cars running stop signs, ditches on the side of the road and opportunities where a bus could possibly slide off onto the side," said Genide. "Not to say it's going to happen but we would rather have them take Brint Rd."

Back-up buses will be available for students if for any reason they do not make their stop in time. If in need of a back-up bus call the school or transportation directly at 419-824-8686.

Lucas County Engineers say the work should be done by August 27 weather permitting.
