Timbers head to Guyana for Champions League clash

The Portland Timbers have traveled to South America to take on Alpha United FC, the Timbers' first-ever CONCACAF Champions League match.

The forecast for Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana, is calling for hot, muggy and stormy conditions by the time the two sides take the pitch.

The Champions League is comprised of 24 teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The South American side, Alpha United FC, actually qualifies for the tournament due to their affiliation in the Caribbean Football Union.

Portland Timbers qualified last season by virtue of winning the Western Conference in Major League Soccer.

Tuesday's match will be played at Providence Stadium in Georgetown at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Alpha United FC will visit Providence Park in Portland on Sept. 23.
