Rafael Nadal announced on Monday that he will not be returning to Flushing Meadows for the 2013 US Open because of his injured right wrist which makes him the fourth champion in the last 45 years to sit out of a tournament.

According to a translation, Nadal wrote "I am announcing that I will not participate in the US Open, a tournament in which over the years I have had very good results. You will understand that it is a hard time for me since it is a tournament that I love and that I have very good memories of the fans, night matches, so many things. Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I am back."

Nadal has had many injuries, but this one is the most significant thus far. He did win his ninth French Open title earlier in the year but rarely played. Nadal has lost his world No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic.

Nadal's posting read, "Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I am back."

Both Nadal and the tournament announced the decision at the same time, just one week before the final Grand Slam.
