Late goal leads Pack past Seahawks

UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Andrew Malinich's diving header off a cross with 7:33 remaining in the game lifted NC State to a 1-0 win over host UNCW on Sunday in the exhibition opener for both teams at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Both teams fought for space in a defensive tilt until Izzly Evans gathered a loose ball on the left flank and sent a cross into the UNCW penalty area. There Malinich dove and connected on a low liner with his head for the game's lone goal.

UNCW's best opportunity to score came in the 56th minute when Jamie Dell settled a loose ball in the penalty area and sent a bending shot that NCSU goalie Joe Mills was able to corral at the far post.

NCSU threatened earlier in the second half when Nick Surkamp, a preseason All-America selection, sent a header towards the crossbar, but UNCW goalie Sam Williams knocked the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick with 21 minutes remaining.

The Wolfpack held a 10-6 advantage in shots and 7-6 in corner kicks.

The Seahawks visit Longwood in their second and final exhibition game on Aug. 23. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. in Farmville, Va. NC State hosts Campbell on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the second of three exhibition matches.
