NASCAR fans flock to Brooklyn for Michigan race

BROOKLYN, MI (Toledo News Now) -

NASCAR fans are enjoying an exciting weekend in Michigan.  Local, national and international fans are pumped for the upcoming race.

"They come from all 50 states and different parts of the world," said Brad Kuhbander, Manager of Media Relations at Michigan International Speedway. "This is their NASCAR fix; they set their vacation up around this event."

Tens of thousands of people from every corner of the planet are flocking to Brooklyn for the Pure Michigan 400 at the Michigan International Speedway, and all the festivities surrounding the event all weekend long.

"Listening to those things go by, it's a complete blur," said Brian Mceneny of Vancouver, WA. "It's amazing the way they go by at 200 miles per hour."

NASCAR isn't just a "guy thing;" it's become a very popular sport for females, as well.

"We've been coming for years. We absolutely love the crowd, we love the faces, the excitement. It's a lot of fun," said Lyn Shepherd of Grand Rapids, MI.

"We meet [people] from all over; we have a notepad of everybody," said NASCAR fan Kim Schmidt. "We meet and ask what cities they're from and then we go visit them every year."

The Pure Michigan 400 brings in more than $400 million.  Sunday's race gets underway at 1 p.m.

NASCAR star Tony Stewart has decided not to race in Michigan because he remains grief-stricken, after striking and killing 20-year-old Kevin Ward, Jr.  Ward had stepped out of his car during a recent Sprint Car race in New York.

"The guy's probably really shaken up," said fan Sean Gustaveson. "I don't even know how I would react in an instance like that, but I really respect his decision. I think it's the right decision."

This is the second race Stewart is sitting out since the accident. Jeff Burton will take Stewart's place at MIS.
