Baconton preps for first region season

BACONTON, GA (WALB) - For the first time in program history, the Baconton Blazers are eligible for the state playoffs as they enter their first season in region play.

The Blazers are in for a challenge as they step up to the plate in Region 1-A.

Head coach Johnny Hayes says the non-region seasons have had their benefits as they prepared players for this season.

But they've also had their cons, such as knowing there was no state playoff berth awaiting the team.

All that has changed now, but Baconton knows it will be an uphill battle.

That's just fine with Hayes, who says he will take his team any day.

"The 34 I have on this roster are good kids, and they're going to give it everything. We're not the most athletic team in the area, and we understand that, but I guarantee they're going to give us everything they've got," Hayes says. "We're going to have to win on technique, discipline, and fundamentals. We understand that and we accept that."

The Blazers open their first region season on August 22 when they travel to Central High School of Talbotton.
