Sylvania building new parking lot without grant

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A grant that would have helped build a new parking lot in Sylvania has been denied by the state.

The grant was for $300,000 and would have also helped downtown businesses with any repairs.

Sylvania city leaders say the plot of land behind the municipal court house will still be transformed into a parking lot no matter what.

The Economic Development Director Bill Sanford says the grant would have covered a good portion of the project.

"The cost of the parking lot is approximately 140 thousand dollars," said Sanford. "The grant would have paid half of that cost but it is in our budget so we are able to go ahead and move forward on building that parking lot."

Sanford also says they are working with the Sylvania Community Improvement Cooperation to get a loan program in place, helping businesses if they need it.

There is still no word on why the grant was denied, but officials say they should find out in September.

Sanford says they are currently figuring out a timeline on when the construction of the lot will take place.
