UH hires high-profile attorney to handle NCAA investigation

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -  For all intents and purposes, the NCAA's work with the University of Hawaii men's basketball team is complete.

The athletics department is currently in wait-and-see mode, but has made a move to prepare for any hit.

Hawaii News Now confirmed Tuesday afternoon that UH has hired an attorney from the Alabama-based law firm of Lightfoot, Franklin and White.

The firm has experience in these kinds of cases before. Texas A & M sought its counsel to handle the Johnny Manziel investigation and so did Auburn during Cam Newton's probe in 2010.

Hawaii athletics director Ben Jay tells HNN that it's still unknown when a decision from the NCAA will come down, but-- when it does he wants expert counsel to handle the matter.

He wouldn't say how much the attorney fees are, but to provide some context, Auburn paid $170,000 for the firm's services.
