When you list what Raven Saunders did this past year, you realize how impressive it has been.
She won her fourth straight state title in shot put set the girls national record in that event, won the national junior championship, and then a few weeks ago won the silver medal at the World Junior Championships.
Saunders was also named the national Gatorade Female Track & Field Athlete of the year. That meant a trip to the ESPYS and a chance to meet big-time athletes, including one of her favorites, Laila Ali.
About a week after her fun in L.A., Saunders got back to business. She took the silver medal at the World Juniors in Oregon on her final throw. All of this success means making the Olympics isn't just a dream, it's a realistic goal!
Looking back this native of Charleston is humbled about what she's done, where's she been and where she might go. Especially when she considers where she is from.
Saunders leaves town for Southern Illinois on Thursday. She surprised a lot of people by choosing that school for a track & field scholarship over big-time programs in the Southeast.
