Family, friends grieve death of Douglas County football player

Emotions ran high at Douglas County High School on Monday after the death of Zyrees Oliver, a rising senior and star at the school.

"He was a very inspirational person, an uplifting person," said Shaquan Byrd, a classmate.

Officials said Oliver collapsed at home after football practice last Tuesday.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Relatives said doctors told them Oliver suffered massive swelling around the brain from overhydration after drinking two gallons of water and two gallons of Gatorade.

Monday morning his family made the difficult decision of removing him from life support after doctors said he would not recover. Friends said they never saw the end coming.

"The day of it, he was cramping up real bad and he was sitting on the bench after practice. But we really couldn't tell anything was going to happen later that night, like he was going to collapse or anything like that, but he was cramping really bad," said Jamond Williams, Oliver's teammate.

Friends said Oliver, who boasted a 3.8 grade-point average, was a star on the field and in the classroom. But they said it's the person he was that will be truly missed.

"He brought a lot of energy to our football team. He was always the most excited person for workouts. He was always the hardest worker even in the weight room and he was the most dedicated person we had on the team." Williams said.

"He just brought everybody up. He just brought the whole community up. We were just talking about how everything was going to be good this year. He was just a great person," said Byrd.
