The algal bloom in Lake Erie is causing problems for the boating and recreation industry in northwest Ohio. Businesses in the area say rentals have slowed since the water crisis.

"Business slowly picked up as the summer went on," explained Erich Greulich, who works for Taylor Recreation. "It peaked around the Fourth of July weekend. We were making a lot of money, the beach was packed, we would have waiting lines for the jet skis. But after the water crisis, the algae was scaring everybody away and business has definitely went down."

Greulich says despite the scare, the water is safe to boat on and business is open.

"I think it has been over-exaggerated a little bit," he said. "The water is not that bad here."

Lake Erie's boating industry is a $1.1 billion industry for the seven Ohio counties bordering the lake.

A water quality researcher said Friday that it is okay to boat on the water, despite the algae.
