TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A toxic algae bloom in Lake Erie made Toledo's water undrinkable for a weekend. But dealing with algae is nothing new for the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant.

How long has the city been dealing with lake algae? Well over half a century.

A Toledo Blade article dated August 29, 1952 outlines issues with lake algae clogging filters at the plant. Even back then the algae issues sparked a call for water conservation. Those who lived in odd numbered houses were asked to water lawns on odd numbered days, and even numbers houses even numbered days.

The same edition of the Blade notes the diagnosis of two new polio victims in the area. Tests of the vaccine which irradiated the disease would not begin for another 5 years.
