Springfield Twp residents concerned as train derailment still not cleaned up

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Crews are still in the process of cleaning up the mess left behind by a train derailment that occurred almost a month ago.

There are several CSX cars off the tracks at Old Airport Highway and Crissey Road in Springfield Township. Residents in the area say they're concerned for the safety of children there, and they want the mess cleaned up as soon as possible.

"This is just across the street from Crissey Elementary School, and these kids start back to school in two or three weeks," said Bill Taylor, who lives nearby. "This creates a real place for the kids to play and it's dangerous and I don't see any real security or anything else like that to protect this site."

A Norfolk Southern representative says there's no timeline on when it will all be cleaned up. He says they are currently working to find a contractor to help, but says in a case like this, it can take some time.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
