TORONTO (RNN) – After four years in construction, one Canadian college student’s creation is finished - his ideal roller coaster in his parent’s suburban Toronto backyard.

And much like its name, David Chesney’s “The Minotaur” is a beast to behold – but this one is not of Greek mythology.

Chesney, a 19-year-old engineering student at Queen’s University, told the Toronto Star he began constructing the ride out of odds and ends and other materials purchased at most hardware stores.

He first posted the video on YouTube in 2012.

According to Chesney, “The Minotaur” flies at speeds of up to 12 miles per hour. The track is 91 feet (or 28 meters) and is comprised of a steel-plated wooden track, and features two-11.8 feet drops. Chesney built an accompanying steel car with knowledge he gained from working at a metal door factory.

In all, Chesney told The Star “The Minotaur” cost him just $3,000. His fascination as a youngster with K’Nex sets fueled his ambition, despite his parent’s desires.

“It just got bigger,” Chesney told The Star. “Then it got to the point where my parents said, ‘It’s huge, but you've gotten this far, so just finish it and then take it down after.’”

Chesney said his dad wants it taken down by summer’s end, but he wants to find a new home for “The Minotaur.”

Admirers of the homemade thrill ride can keep up-to-date with the backyard beast on its Facebook page.

Queen's University's student newspaper even got a ride on "The Minotaur" and took a point-of-view video of the coaster in action.

The project is reminiscent of the California dad who built a $3,500 roller coaster for his 10-year-old son in the family’s backyard, entitled “The Coaster Dad Project.”
