TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Like many other homes in Lucas and Wood Counties, a November EF 2 tornado damaged the home of Jeff and Sherry Sims.

The home sustained damage to the roof and the siding. The couple also had to deal with damage their fenced gate and debris from downed trees.

The couple hired Jia-Moore Construction to repair the damage the day after the storm.  Jeff says about a week or two later State Farm gave the company a list of the damages.

"They would come out and do a little work here and there and never show up again," Sims said.

Jeff says the siding on the house was replaced but now it's lifting, the gate was never replaced, the shingles on the roof are lifting and there is still debris from those downed trees in the backyard.

"We just feel that something has to be done. This is our home and it just does not feel the same," said Jeff.

Jeff and his wife gave our Call 11 for Action team a call after they say they tried to reach the owners of Jia-Moore repeatedly. We found that State Farm issued a check to the couple for $9,437.00 on November 27.

Jeff gave us a document which showed the check was then turned over to Jia-Moore a week later. Our Call 11 for Action reached out to Dave Moore who stated he was the owner of the company.

Moore says the worker assigned to the Sims home was fired, and that worker never communicated what was going on there. Plus, Moore claims he never received a phone call from the Jeff and Sherry Sims.

After a couple of conversations Dave decided to make a trip out to the Sims' home last week. The company has painted the wood panels on the home's patio door and fixed the siding on the left side of the home.

The couple says the rest of the work should be completed within a month.

If you find yourself in a situation like this, here's what you should do:

  • Have a written contract with your contractor. A written one will hold the proof that you made an agreement to get the work done and the timeline would be stated within the document.
  • Try to track down your contractor and convince them to finish the job they were hired to do.
  • If you cannot reach them or they refuse to finish the work, you will have a timeline of events to show to a lawyer if it gets to that stage.

If you have a problem with a contractor, give our Call 11 for Action team a call at (419) 255-2255.
