New park set to open in Toledo's uptown neighborhood

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A sustainable park project in Toledo is nearing completion and will be opening in the near future.

Uptown Green is located in the uptown area of Toledo on Madison Avenue, between 18th and 20th streets.  People living there are very excited about the transformation that has taken place.

"There is nowhere in uptown that is really near this area that offers a nice, quiet kind of respite for the community," said Julie Champa, Executive Director of Uptown Association.

That's about to change.  The plants and trees are in place and the grass is growing.  The 2.5-acre piece of land looks a lot different than it did not long ago.

"There were other dilapidated structures, those are gone now," Champa said. "It was all just solid, busted-up concrete and now you look at it: It's lush and green and beautiful flowers and trees."

A big part of the plan is an amphitheater, but the Uptown Association says they need a little more funding to make that happen.

"The stage and the backdrops are already in place, so is all the infrastructure," Champa said. "We're ready to have a music event once we're able to get this landscape up."

The City will work closely with uptown residents and association members to take care of the park, which is expected to open by this fall.  There are also plans for a nine-hole Frisbee golf course to be added.
