TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Start High School student was sentenced to three years in state prison after bringing a loaded handgun to school.

Willie Carter was sentenced to three years for possession of the gun, and another seven months for possession of marijuana found on him at the time of his arrest.

It was reveled in court on Thursday that Carter was part of a local Blood gang.

Carter's brother was murdered in December. Carter says he was being threatened by other gang members. He says he was shot at twice, and that he kept the gun in a locker for protection.

"It was a situation where he knew walking home, because he had to walk home from school, that the situation could get heated at any time," said the assistant principal of Start High School.

Once the school found out about the gun, Carter was confronted by the school resource officer. The officer says he had to pry the loaded gun away from Carter before he started complying.

On Thursday, the judge gave Carter the maximum sentence for the two felony charges.

"We agree that the defendant should have been placed into the institution. [This is a] very serious offense and it sends a message to the community," said Lucas County Prosecutor Charles McDonald.

Carter's attorney, Keith Mitchell, says he was hoping Carter could serve community service, even with a juvenile record. He says Carter's family was hoping for the same outcome. Mitchell says regardless, he hopes Carter goes down the right path while serving his time.

"Sometimes when young people go to prison, that is where they learn more about crime than anything else, and so I am hoping that is not the case here," said Mitchell.

The judge urged Carter to further his education while in prison.
