Group cleans neighborhoods, vacant lots in Toledo summer program

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A group of young men are cleaning up neighborhoods one lot at a time, and they are getting the job done.  Pathway's Summer Green Neighborhoods Program is making a difference in neighborhoods throughout the City of Toledo this way.

"I like what I'm doing because I'm not at any desk," said worker Taywyn Mason. "You feel great outside, just working to clean up the community."

Taywyn Mason is just one of the many young men working hard this summer, making money and putting neighborhoods back in shape. 

"A lot of these young men, it's their first job and they are enjoying it," said Richard Carter, a foreman with the program. "They like being free and being able to roam and take care of the neighborhood. A lot of them, it's their neighborhood."

"The community receives us very well, they come out with water, they come out and give gratitude, they pat us on the back, ask if they can help," said Bryant White, a supervisor with the program. "The only thing that we ask when we do it in a neighborhood [is] that they continue to clean the neighborhood."

So far, the trash has been picked up and the high grass has been cut at around 250 lots throughout Toledo. Their goal is 600 lots before the end of the summer.

"Call the city, let us know where there are vacant lots, we're up to the task," said Stanley Lowe, CEO of Pathway. "We want to take this on and we really want to take it on, not because we're an agency, we want to take it on because we have hired, we have employed Toledoans to take care of our own neighborhood."

The young men range in age from 16 to 22 years old.  Pathway's Summer Neighborhoods Program has been going on for a few weeks now and will run through September 7.
