North Toledo pool opens after help from volunteers

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Jamie Farr Pool in Toledo is officially open, but only for a short time.

There were many smiles on Wednesday when the pool opened its gates. The Jamie Farr Pool was plagued with plumbing issues that the city didn't have money to repair this year.

Fortunately, two union groups, Local 50 Plumbers and Laborers Local 500, stepped up and volunteered to fix the issues.

"When a pool like this opens up for children, as old as it is, and the community has pulled together to help with that, it makes a huge statement," said Tresa Reece of the Local 50.

City leaders are hoping that statement reaches Toledo youth and encourages them to get off the streets.

"Violence these days is really bad, and I just don't like it," said Taylor Byrd at the pool. "It makes me feel unsafe, but with this pool open, it makes me feel safe."

Kids at the pool say they plan to take full advantage of it being open, but it closes on August 2, when all other city pools close.

When asked if it was even worth having it open, City Councilwoman Paula Hicks-Hudson said it definitely is.

"It's keeping a promise. It's important to have this," she said. "Sure, we would like for it to be open longer, but we have to make sure no neighborhood feels left out or forgotten."

City officials say having the pool open for only a couple weeks this summer only costs the city $500.
