Humane Ohio offers help for Sylvania's stray cat issue

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Even with a feeding ban in place for stray cats in Sylvania, there are ways you can help the cats.

Humane Ohio offers traps as part of their trap, neuter, release program.

"We will, of course, always offer the residents of Sylvania who are doing this on their own time and their own money spay/neuter at a low price, and traps that you can rent for a fully refundable deposit," said marketing director of Humane Ohio Kristy Kissoff.

The deposit to rent a trap is $60. If the cat needs medical attention, Humane Ohio will provide treatment. If it's friendly, they will work with other local organizations to find it a home.

They do warn it may be harder to catch cats with the new law.

"We would hope that they be allowed to feed so that they can get the cats into the area on a consistent basis, they would be able to feed in the traps, then they would be able to spay and neuter them," said Kissoff.

If a stray cat is destroying your property, there are steps you can take.

"We all know that cats don't like water," Kissoff said. If you put up a sprinkler in an area where they are coming into your yard, you can deter them from getting into your yard. You can put out lava rocks instead of mulch, [or close] off openings to your deck and basement."

Sylvania Councilman Mike Brown says people are still allowed to feed cats if they are using the traps. He also says they are only enforcing the law on a complaint basis.

To become part of Humane Ohio's trap, neuter, release program, you can contact them at 419-266-5607.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
