TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are looking for the men responsible for robbing two bike riders on the University of Toledo bike trail.

TPD says it happened on Saturday around 6 p.m. Two Ottawa Hills teens were riding their bikes near the Secor Bridge when they didn't feel comfortable. The boys tell police they saw a group of men on the trail and decided to get off and take city streets.

They turned down Valleston Parkway and hit a dead end.  That's when they realized they were being followed, according to police reports.

Police say three men, all riding bicycles, asked to see one of the teens' cell phones.  The victim replied by saying, "It's dead."  Then police say a suspect pushed one teen off his bike and another punched the other victim.  They took off with a wallet and an iPhone.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department says the trails are policed.

"We have officers that patrol them, officers on bicycles that are on them quite often," he said. "Other law enforcement agencies also patrol them.  I know University of Toledo, plus you have the Metropark Rangers, so they are heavily patrolled."

Sgt. Heffernan also says the bike trail is monitored by cameras.  Those cameras were able to capture images of the suspects in this robbery.

But Heffernan says riders should use common sense and trust your instincts.

"Do basic safety things," he said. "Carry your phone with you, go in a group if you can, and if you feel like something bad is going to happen to you or someone is following you, give us a call right away."

Police are still looking for the suspects in this robbery.  If you know anything that could help police, you are urged to call Crimestopper at 419-255-1111.
