LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Board of Elections has a fresh look.  Three new members are ready to hit the ground running after problems with previous members.

The board met Tuesday at One Government Center in downtown Toledo on Tuesday, along with Ohio Secretary of State John Husted. Husted appointed the board's newest members following the removal of three members a few weeks ago.

"It's a new day. There's a lot of great expectations from them," said Husted. "I'm confident they're beginning the process of restoring a culture of competence and cooperation to the Lucas County Board of Elections."

The three newest members of the board are Brenda Hill, Judge Peter Handwork and Mark Wagoner.  They, along with the other members, say they're ready to get the job done.

"I think it sends a message that we intend to recreate the harmony that's needed," said Handwork. "I think what was expressed in this meeting today was excellent. We will get along, we will make this work for the citizens of our county."

"I don't want to be worrying about what happened in the past because we're going to start fresh. We have started fresh," Hill said.

Current Lucas County Board of Elections Director Gina Kaczala wants to put the problems of the past behind her.  She says the previous members of the board did not get along and there was a lot of bickering.  During the primary election in May, results were extremely delayed because of a confrontation between board members.

"Some personalities meshed, some did not," said Kaczala. "I think when you have that problem, there's a lack of respect, then you start to have problems...I think this board is coming in with a great attitude."

The Lucas County Board of Elections will meet again on Monday, August 4 at 4 p.m., one day ahead of the August 5 primary election.
