Mercy to build freestanding ER at former Central Elementary site in Sylvania Township

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A brand new freestanding emergency room is coming to Sylvania Township. Mercy will build the new ER on the site of the former Central Elementary School at Central Avenue and King Road.

Crews have already begun the work of demolishing the old school building.

Mercy will spend $14.3 million on the 24-hour facility, which will employ between 30 and 40 people.

Business managers near the former elementary school site say they're glad to see something done with the property.

"They vacated that school at Christmas break in 2012, so it's been roughly a year and a half. It was awesome as a school, hearing little kids playing out a recess, so it's been kind of sad having it be vacant for the past 18 months or so we're very excited to see at least some kind of activity there," said nearby Tireman store manager Read Schalmo.
