PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - Perrysburg residents willsoon decide on whether or not they want to pay more taxes so the schooldistrict can expand. A bond issue was approved for the November ballot during ameeting Monday night.

District leaders say theyneed the money the bond would generate because there had been a steady increasein enrollment, but nowhere to put the students as classrooms fill up. So theywant to build a new school to house fifth and sixth grade students. They saythe new building would house 900 students and would be built somewhere in thesouthwest corner of the district.

"I feel like the elementaryschools are very overcrowded," said Perrysburg parent Nichole Hubbard.

The district is currentlyusing 20 modular units to provide extra classrooms, but Hubbard says she hopesto see that change.

"I think, probably, thosekids don't feel as much a part of the schools as other kids do in theclassroom," she said.

Hubbard could see thatchange if voters approve the bond issue in November.

"Every 10 years, thedistrict has added a new building or done a major addition," said SuperintendentTom Hosler. "Here we are, 13 years, 600 more students and we need to dosomething permanently."

If approved, residentswould start to pay extra taxes in 2016, when the current levy expires. Thechange would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $3 more per month thanwhat they're paying right now.

While some residents don'twant to see their taxes increase, Hubbard says it would be money well spent, and she thinks the community will come together to support it.

"Perrysburg citizens arevery committed to having a good school system, so I think we always do what weneed to do," she said.
