Man shot early Monday in known gang area

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - During a summer where there seems to be an inordinate number of shootings, Toledo Police are investigating another. This one occurred at Auburn and Ottawa, in a part of town police call BUMA.

BUMA is named for the four streets that border the area: Bancroft, Upton, Monroe and Auburn. Police say one of the area gangs operates within that perimeter.

One man was shot Monday morning outside a popular after-hours club called The Wash.

TPD was called to Toledo Hospital at 3:30 Monday morning after the victim, Carrington Brown, drove himself to the emergency room. Brown told police he was standing outside of the club when he heard shots fired and was hit in the arm.

In March, Michael Williams, Jr, was shot and killed outside the same club, where police say they have often had problems.

"We've had numerous incidents there over the years," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "We keep applying pressure over there. We have officers, SWAT, our gang unit over there pretty regularly, but we can't be everywhere all the time."

Heffernan says the crime camera did capture video of this recent shooting. Investigators are reviewing the footage, but if anyone has information that can help them with this investigation, they should call Crime Stopper at 419-255-1111. Callers may remain anonymous.
