TPD's volunteer patrol class graduated Friday

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The newest members of the Toledo Police Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol Class graduated Friday.

The RSVPatrol program began in 2000 and now includes more than 60 volunteers.

"We go out and check on seniors, spend time with them, not only checking their safety, but providing socialization for some people who might otherwise have nobody to talk to," explained Kathleen Mohr, Toledo Police community services officer.

One of the newest patrol members is 85-year-old Natalie Mitchell, recently retired from ProMedica.

"[I'm] looking forward to being able to go into homes to help the aged who are sitting by themselves and would like a little attention," said Mitchell.

The volunteers go through an intense week-long training. However, they say that the training is worthwhile.

"It's like paying it forward; also, it's interesting meeting our clients, some you're able to help," said Willie Robinson, RSVPatrol member.

The RSVPatrol is a free service that is not only offered to the elderly, but to all residents of Toledo.
