The Marathon Classic is not just about golf. Every year, the thousands of dollars raised are donated to children's charities.

One recipient of the proceeds is the Jamie Farr Scholarship, which is set up for local students to attend college.

"These are students who are future leaders," said a spokesperson for the scholarship. "The scholarship tries to identify those future leaders and provide them with the opportunity to go to college. And we hope, we think and believe [they'll come back to northwest Ohio and lead us in the future."

Another recipient is the Court-Appointed Special Advocates Program in Toledo, which helps children who have been removed from their homes after abuse or neglect. They have a special plan for the donation: They want to create a program to help teens after they've reached adulthood.

"The money that we get…will enable us to hire a person to run that program and train volunteers specific to the needs of the emancipating teens," a spokesperson said.

The local Ronald McDonald House helps hundreds of families every year when a child needs medical treatment. They also benefit greatly from the Marathon Classic.

"It is something that we do rely on as part of our budget," said a Ronald McDonald House representative. "It's that much less that we don't have to go out into the community to ask for."
