Congresswoman Kaptur calls Malaysian flight act of terrorism, tragedy

(Toledo News Now) -

US Congresswoman and Ohio native Marcy Kaptur calls the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH-17 a "deep tragedy in a very troubled area."

Kaptur says the United States should react by becoming part of an international investigation.

"I think the United States should work with our allies around the world and investigate the satellite images, some of which are already available. I think we need to find the black box," she said.

Kaptur believes Russia is to blame for the flight's crash. US officials say the plane was shot down by a missile.

"If it was some type of surface-to-air missile capability, that is held in Russian hands. It is not in Ukrainian hands," she said.

Kaptur calls it an act of terrorism.

"The president of the Ukraine has called it an act of terrorism. I think the entire engagement is an act of terrorism," she said.

The crash hits home for Kaptur, who comes from a proud Ukrainian heritage. She says it's a country of fearful people scrounging for a living, barely able to make ends meet.

"Well, if you look at what the Ukrainian people want, they want a whole nation," she said. "They don't want Russian involvement in their country, military involvement. They want to work with Russia."
