KC Pet Project believes dog's legs were intentionally broken

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Scott Smith surprised his 11-year-old twins Carlie and Haleigh with a pointer mix named Sonny.

The Smith family knows not every dog finds a good home and when they heard about what happened to a dog named Sestra - a 1-year-old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog mix - they couldn't believe it.

"An animal trusts you to take care of them, feed them, kind of like your kids," Smith said.

But Sestra had no one looking out for her. About three weeks ago someone driving along Highway 71 near 85th Street found her stuffed in a garbage bag.

"She had two broken legs that looked like they were intentionally broken. They were broken in the same place," said Tori Fugate with the Kansas City Pet Project.

It was a clear sign of abuse. Sestra also had a fractured skull and broken ribs.

Veterinarians at the KC Pet Project stabilized her and Thursday she was in surgery at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia.

"We're taking in almost 10,000 animals here at the KC Pet Project, so we see a lot of animals that have medical issues, severe injuries and it doesn't matter how they come to us, we're going to get them the proper care they need," Fugate said.

Sestra's surgery costs about $6,000. The KC Pet Project is trying to raise enough money to cover it.

Eventually they think she can end up like Sonny, on his way home to a loving family.

"I hope that she recovers well and that she has a loving family," Haleigh said.
