Building where Toledo firefighters died torn down

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Thebuilding where two Toledo firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty isbeing torn down.

OnJanuary 26, Steve Machcinski and Jamie Dickman died while battling a fire at528 Magnolia. On Monday, demolition crews worked to tear down the back portionof the building.

Residentsin the area say the demolition was a long time coming, and they're happy to seea building with such negative memories attached to it torn down.

"Thebuilding's just been up for so long," said Curtis Marshall, who lives nearby. "There'sreally not too much good to say about it."

A smallcrowd gathered to watch the former apartment building get demolished. They saywhat happened there in January has cast a dark shadow on the neighborhood, andthey're ready for the building to go.

"I feelsorry for the people that was living there because they got kicked out of theirhomes," Marshall said. "It was a tragic thing that happened there."

Somepeople say they think of the fallen firefighters every time they pass 528Magnolia, and they'd like to see the area turned into some type of memorial.
