Building where Toledo firefighters died torn down

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The building where two Toledo firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty is being torn down.

On January 26, Steve Machcinski and Jamie Dickman died while battling a fire at 528 Magnolia. On Monday, demolition crews worked to tear down the back portion of the building.

Residents in the area say the demolition was a long time coming, and they're happy to see a building with such negative memories attached to it torn down.

"The building's just been up for so long," said Curtis Marshall, who lives nearby. "There's really not too much good to say about it."

A small crowd gathered to watch the former apartment building get demolished. They say what happened there in January has cast a dark shadow on the neighborhood, and they're ready for the building to go.

"I feel sorry for the people that was living there because they got kicked out of their homes," Marshall said. "It was a tragic thing that happened there."

Some people say they think of the fallen firefighters every time they pass 528 Magnolia, and they'd like to see the area turned into some type of memorial.
