Sandusky Co. nature center under construction after 10 years of planning

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The floor is laid and the walls are going up at the nature center under construction in Sandusky County.

With the help of the public, the Sandusky County Park District is building a ‘40s- and ‘50s-era farm space at Creek Bend Farm, located off South Main Street in Lindsey, Ohio.

Public input over the last year played a large part in the design of the nature center.

"We asked them to draw a picture of the park they wanted, and this is the coloring that they put together," said Steve Gruner, director of the Sandusky County Park District.

The project, which will include a small museum with educational displays, public restrooms, and a 5K walking trail, has been in the works for 10 years.

Park officials say the center will bridge the gap between the classroom and nature for student visitors.

"What we're lacking across the whole Sandusky County Park District is indoor classroom space to bring kids out, learn about the environment and nature, and then actually step right outside into that environment," said Gruner.

The two-story, 4,000-square-foot nature center is expected to be completed by mid-October.

Construction will cost approximately $1.5 million. As of June 23, the park district has raised all but about $50,000 for the project through donations.

Residents who are able to donate are encouraged to call the Sandusky County Park District Office at 419-334-4495, or visit
