For sports collector/dealer, collectibles are more than just merchandise

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For 92-year-old Don Pinciotti every day at work is like a trip down memory lane.

"It takes me back," said Pinciotti. "It takes me back to the old days and the way baseball was played."

His days as a sports memorabilia collector started smack dab in the middle of his career as a minor league ball player in the 1940s.

In fact, Pinciotti still owns the first set of baseball cards he ever bought.

"I was looking through some cards and all of a sudden I saw 7 or 8 guys I played with," said Pinciotti. "I said, 'Oh my god, I'll buy it."

Those cards aren't for sale at his store inside the Maumee Antique Mall, but other items that's he's gathered over the years are.

He's got a little bit of everything; sports cards, signed pictures, signed baseballs, old programs, sports action figures, some vintage golf clubs, and even some old varsity jackets.

Why does he collect?

"Number 1, it's history. Number 2, it's worth a lot of money," said Pinciotti.

At 92, Don says he sells not because he has to, but because he wants to. It keeps him young. And helps keep his collectibles out of the house.

"It's a hobby. A lot of people have hobbies, and when you have a hobby at 92, it keeps me alive," said Pinciotti.

Making a sale is great, but to Pinciotti, nothing beats having a conversation about the good old days.

"It's about meeting people, talking about baseball. It keeps me going," said Pinciotti.

As they say, the past is in the past. Unless of course, it's presently on sale for $250 at Pinciotti's store.
