Faux EZ Pass email tries to scam customers out of money

People in the Toledo area are getting emails saying they owe money on their EZ Pass, but don't fall for it - it's a scam.

Christine Morris of Springfield Township got the email a few days ago telling her she had unpaid tolls.

"It was kind of ironic because I was going to go into EZ Pass to update my payment information," Morris said. "This email came through and it went to my junk email."

The email has an EZ Pass Service Center logo in it, and it tells people to pay the debt. It includes a link, but whatever you do, don't click the link.

Luckily, Morris and her husband caught the warning signs and didn't click the link. If they had, they would have received a virus.

"There was a bogus return address," Morris said. "The sender address did not match up with the agency that the email was claiming to be from. And then also there was a link in there, and if you hovered over the link you could see that the link took you to yet another site that did not match up."

"It's so easy for criminals to send emails that look official, and this looks like it comes from EZ Pass," said Dick Eppstein, president of the Better Business Bureau.

Eppstein says businesses never demand a quick payment via email.

"The important thing is wait," he said. "Don't click on the links that come to you from strange emails. EZ Pass is not sending this out. They don't operate that way."

He says if you receive this email, delete it.

The Ohio Turnpike Commission is warning people of the scam on their website.
