OSHP has eyes on the roads for holiday weekend

On an average day, there are at least three Ohio state troopers watching over Toledo-area roadways. For a holiday like the Fourth of July, that number goes up.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - On an average day, there are at least three Ohio state troopers watching over Toledo-area roadways. For a holiday like the Fourth of July, that number goes up.

"Right now, we have five troopers for the day shift," said Trooper Jason Metzger. "Along with a criminal patrol team and other posts that come and work the area."

He says they're out looking for a number of traffic violations.

"We are looking for failure to yields, such as stop signs, red lights, speeding offense, following too closely offense, as well as seat belts," he said.

They post troopers in areas where events are going on for the holiday, like fireworks shows at night.

Metzger says they also use intelligent policing data to staff areas where accidents usually occur.

"Our OVIs get put into a computer, and then the computer tells us, 'Hey, this is probably going to be where the most OVIs, or the most crashes are going to be for this specific day,'" he said.

On Thursday night, troopers made 16 arrests in the Toledo area. They will continue to monitor the roads throughout the holiday weekend.
