(Toledo News Now) -

In 2013, there were eight deaths and 11,000 injuries nationwide due to fireworks. Safety experts say it's best to leave the fireworks to professionals when celebrating holidays, but if you do buy fireworks to set off at home, keep some basic safety tips in mind.

Fireworks Safety

-Children should always be supervised

-Never let children hold the fireworks

-Wear eye protection

-Never attempt to re-light a dud

-Don't throw or point fireworks toward people or structures

As for more common items like sparklers, the fire department still warns to be cautious.

"Understand also that those can be dangerous, as well, especially to your children," said TFD Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld. "Make sure you have a bucket of water nearby that you can put those items in."

Sparklers burn up to 1,200 degrees. As with anything, use common sense and stay safe.
