(Toledo News Now) -

Voters in Ohio won't be seeing the medical marijuana issue on the November ballot this year.

Advocates of legalizing it didn't get enough signatures by the Wednesday deadline. They had about 100,000 of the 385,000 signatures required to get the issue on the ballot, but they're still optimistic about the future.

"It's just shown that we really need to work on the local level as much as possible, do some organizing and kind of community-building city by city across Ohio," said local activist Sean Nestor. "I think the fruits of that through things like the Sensible Marijuana Ordinance will really help bolster the infrastructure we need for a statewide initiative."

Nestor and other activists will look to have the issue on a future ballot. In the meantime, they'll continue to push for the decriminalization of marijuana locally.
