Man discovers black widow spider in broccoli at Ohio Kroger

Sometimes you might find a stray bug or worm in your produce, but a dangerous black widow spider? Believe it. That was the case for Jacob Vaughn, a third-year medical student at UTMC, who bought a bunch of fresh broccoli at Kroger in Maumee, only to find a large arachnid alive and acting feisty on the vegetables. The South Toledo man said he discovered the spider while washing off the broccoli before cooking it when "the spider came out and started waving his hands. It was pret...

HANCOCK COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A pretrial was scheduled for Tuesday in the case involving a teacher at Riverdale Elementary in Hancock County.

Barbara Williams was caught on surveillance video lifting kindergartner Ian Nelson up by his face. Williams, charged with child endangering, did not appear in court on Tuesday and her attorney would not comment, but Nelson's parents and attorney met with a prosecutor in a private room.

The Nelsons say their child went from loving school to hating it after the incident caught on video. Since it occurred, there has been no official investigation conducted by the Hancock County prosecutor's office, sheriff's office or child services. The case has only used school reports.

"The prosecutor has not contacted us at all," said Ian's father Anthony Nelson. "We actually found the docket online and found out that she had pled a not guilty plea. Between our attorney and ourselves, we've done research ourselves to find out what things are going on."

"I don't think it is to anybody's benefit to walk away from the courthouse angry or upset about that single thing," said the Nelsons' attorney Dan Margolis. "We are here because we are concerned about it and we want justice."

The Nelsons say they are not sure at this time if they will file their own civil lawsuit, but Margolis says he's pleased with how Tuesday's discussion went. He says he expects a more thorough investigation to follow in the coming weeks, including interviews with Ian Nelson and another student who claimed similar abuse from Williams.
