Two in hospital after wrong way collision in north Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo police have identified the two drivers in the fiery head on crash that happened at Benore Rd. and the I-75 overpass on Friday night.

23-year-old Joshua Carter and 22-year-old Jackie Wagner are both hospitalized and in critical condition.

Police say a white Lincoln being driven by Carter was traveling the wrong way on Benore when it crashed into a Grand Prix driven by Wagner.

The Lincoln burst into flames.

Other drivers stopped their vehicles and pulled Carter from the car.

Wagner was also rescued and taken by air ambulance to the hospital.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

"I was driving westbound on Benore and the white Lincoln almost hit me head on and swerved. And I watched him hit the car behind me. It was horrific. He was probably going 60 miles an hour," said Chuck Burge, witness.

Off duty fire chief Terry Goad rescued the driver from the Lincoln.

"The car was totally engulfed in flames, started getting worse. Someone said someone was trapped in there so I ran up, kicked the door at first. Luckily we got the door pried. His foot was kind of pinned. Finally a couple of us got him pulled out at the last minute," said Goad.

Benore Road at the I-75 overpass was closed while crews cleaned up the mess.
