Call 11 For Action: Toledo residents are advised to report neighborhood blight

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Neighbors say there are about 13 abandoned houses on Willow Avenue in east Toledo, and that's just on one block. Now, neighbors are seeing a lot of trash being dumped in the neighborhood. The city says they're working to do something about it, but they need the community's help.

Many people in the area want to stop seeing houses that are abandoned, dirty, and a dump site for other people's trash. Eugene Fountain has lived on the street for years and says all the blight not only looks bad, it makes him fear for his safety.

"The police chase people. They hide in the weeds, and they get away," said Fountain.

The Commissioner of Code Enforcement says there is a long process to eliminate the problem. It starts with the neighborhood calling to report it.

"Beyond notification we can go several different avenues. We can pursue them criminally with orders. We can pursue them civilly fines and tickets. We can go through the municipal court system to enforce the ordinances. We can go through demolitions if it's absolutely necessary," said Dennis Kennedy, Commissioner of Code Enforcement.

The commissioner says one house has had several complaints on it, and the city has notified the owners that they are pursuing it criminally.

"This house right behind me has had 4 complaints on it in the past 2 years, the most recent complaint being April 2014 for a board up. So we're going to end up in court if the owner doesn't respond to us," said Kennedy.

TPD deals with illegal dumping, so if you see it happening, you're asked to be a witness. You can remain anonymous, but it's important to get a license plate number or a good description, so that they can pursue charges and hopefully stop it from happening.
